* This is a fairly long walk with several steep uphill sections, so a good general level of fitness is required.
Your Waiheke Walking Tour will start at Matiatia Wharf when you disembark from the ferry or we can pick up from your Waiheke holiday accommodation if you wish. After a short drive through Oneroa village, we leave the main road and take a more scenic route with wonderful views across the Hauraki Gulf and Palm Beach.
The wonderful cascades walk should take around 1-1.5 hours taking the Nīkau Track from the car park. The trail takes you through dense native bush populated by Kereru, fantails, silver eye, grey warbler and noisy tui.
Whakanewha Regional Park is a lush coastal forest with taraire, kohekohe and old kanuka trees, wide sweeping beach and wonderful bush walks. The beach wetland area is home to rare birdlife such as the banded rail, spotless crake and the New Zealand dotterel.
For this tour, we recommend taking a break for lunch at the lovely Batch Winery. It is conveniently situated just above Whakenewha at the end of the walk and has the highest altitude vineyard on Waiheke.
This well-positioned vineyard not only boasts fantastic wine and food but also spectacular views across the island to Auckland in the distance. We recommend their signature ‘High Tea’ consisting of three tiers off New Zealand vintage dishes.
After a well-deserved lunch, we take you on a tour of the beautiful far side of the island via Onetangi Beach. No visit to Waiheke would be complete without a visit to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Leaving Onetangi your Waiheke walking tour continues towards the eastern side of the island. The drive towards Stony Batter is spectacular and you will have plenty of time to stop and take in the view of the Gulf Islands and beyond to the Coromandel Peninsula.
Moving south now to the beautiful Man O’War Bay where you can take a walk along the lovely beach looking towards Pakatoa and Rotoroa Islands.
Man O’War winery tasting room is set back from the beach in beautiful shaded surroundings and offers a range of food and wine tasting experiences. Established in 1993, Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks.
Leaving Man O’War Bay we follow the steep gravel road along the winding south coast of the island passing Awakiriapa Bay, Cowes Bay and Te Matuka Bay on the left with beautiful green valleys and farmland on the right.
From Onetangi we take the main Island road back to Oneroa passing through Ostend and Surfdale on the way. here you will plenty of time to explore the selection of interesting stores and cafes along the main street. Enjoy a coffee with a view or cool down with a delicious Island Gelato one of our favourites.
Take a walk down to the lovely crescent beach, home to dozens of visiting yachts and a great place for a final swim or afternoon walk.
Each tour also has a recommended place for lunch. If you have a different lunch venue in mind, just let us know when making your booking. Alternatively, if you would like to arrange a tailor-made tour, please book the ‘Custom Tour’ or get in touch via the contact form.
